How to make an easel for painting with cardboard

Making an easel for painting with cardboard is a straightforward procedure. The exciting thing about the DIY project is it doesn't require any investment. You can use any cardboard that is available in your house. They arrive as the packaging of various items at free of cost mostly. Below, we will let describe the step by step of making an easel for painting with cardboard.

You will need the mentioned items for the project:

  1. Cardboard
  2. Marker Pen
  3. Cutter
  4. Glue Gun

Here is the procedure that you will need to follow:

Step 1:

Put the cardboard in a flat surface and measure 22 inches length and 2.5 inches of width. Then mark the measurement using the marker pen. Then cut the measured unit out using a cutter. Make sure that the cutter is sharp so that it can produce a precise cut.

After that, mark a straight line in the middle of the new cardboard. Then using the cutter, score a line on the mark. Do this part with the proper concentration as there is a risk of cutting.

Step 2:

Now mark 1.3 inches from the end of each strip to create a tab by cutting them. Fold the tab using glue. Wait a while for the glue to become stable.

Step 3:

Now take the remaining part of the cardboard. You will need to create some squares from this unit. The size of the square will be 1.4 inches. Cut them out precisely using the knife from the cardboard. Then cut the square in half diagonal to create triangles from it. Place the triangles at the top of the folding lines of our main cardboard and then secure them using the glue.

Step 4:

In this step, we will be supporting legs for the cardboard. They will be 5.1 inches wide and 22 inches long. Mark the measurement on a cardboard and cut that part out. You can make the process easier by cutting 22 inches from the cardboard and then remove 2.5 centimeters from both sides. After doing so, you will end up with square tubes.

Step 5:

Now you will need to create tabs from the square strips you created earlier. For doing so, mark 2.5 cm from each end of the strips and cut them out. Then you will be able to create strips using them by folding them one by one. Now you can glue the tables and folded squares to fix them.

Step 6:

Now create a rectangular shape, which will be 5.1 inches and 16 inches. Now create square tubes by folding the segment and glue them. These will be used as strong legs of our easel.

Step 7:

Now you will need to pierce the cardboard to connect it with the legs. Start by marking 1.5 inches from the end of one leg and then flit it over to create another mark on the opposite side. After that, take a pen and dig through the holes using it. Put the legs next to the pierced one. Now connect them using a pen.

Step 8:

The easel is almost ready. Put the easel in a flat position and glue both sides of the legs for the cross members. Position the legs in your preferred position before fixing them. Wait for a while to make the glue robust. Then connect the other leg to support the easel. You are done!

How to make an easel for painting with woods

You can also create an easel using woods. However, this procedure will be a little bit challenging. You will need to buy woods and some other required things. Keep reading to know the step by step process of making an easel using woods.

You will need:

  1. Three pieces of wood (2.4 meters long)
  2. Tape measure
  3. Hand saw or power saw
  4. Screws/ Nails
  5. Hinge
  6. Marker Pen

Here are the steps that you will require to follow:

Step 1:

Using the tape measure, measure the exact length of the wood and mark the measurement using a marker pen. Then cut the measured part for working with them. You will need to cut the woods in the below measurements:

  1. Two pieces (1.8 meters) for main legs.
  2. One-piece (1.5 meters) for the back leg.
  3. One-piece (68 centimeters) crosspiece.
  4. One-piece (23 centimeters) crosspiece.

Be cautious while cutting the wood to be assured about your safety and end up with smooth cuts.

Step 2:

Now put the two legs on a flat surface so that they resemble the shape of "A." Then put 68 centimeters cross piece in the bottom so that it forms a horizontal line in the middle of the create shape.

Step 3:

Now drill three screws in each side of the 68 cm wood to fix it with the 1.8 m legs. You can also use nails and hammer if you don’t have access to the screws.

Step 4:

Now flip the "A" frame carefully. Then place the 23 cm cross piece on the top of the A shape. After that, use screws or nail to attach the 23 cm leg to the A-frame.

Step 5:

Now we will attach the hinge. Place the hinge in downward facing with the leaf pointing toward the downside of the frame A. then position it at the center of the 9.1-inch cross piece. Secure it using the drill with the wood. Now you will need to push 1.5 m legs under the hinge so that it can touch the 23 cm piece. Then secure the hinge with screws.

Step 6:

Now stand the easel to an upright position and then drill a hole in the middle of the 68 cm piece. You will also need to create the same hole in the back leg for a rope. The hole needs to be a little extra wider than the rope. Now thread the rope through the holes and tie a firm knot, so they don't slide through. Cut off the remaining cord.

Step 7:

Now we will create a dowel hole to accommodate different sized canvas on the easel. You will need to drill dowel holes in the frame with 1.5 centimeters gaps between them. Make sure the holes are close to diameter so that they can fit the dowels properly. Now place the dowel in the holes and push them for fixing.

Step 8:

Now put the completed easel on its supporting leg. Also, position the back legs for support. Now you can place your canvas in the cross piece on the easel. You can adjust the dowel up or down according to the canvas size to accommodate it.
